Enforcing seed regulation implementation for better seed sector development

BENEFIT-ISSD Oromia East unit organized a seminar on Ethiopian Seed Regulation to create awareness for seed value chain actors and stakeholders on Ethiopian Seed strategy, policy, and regulation on July 31,2017 at Ras Hotel, Harar City. The seminar has also objectives aimed at enforcing implementation of seed policy and regulation, designing solutions for current challenges in seed production, certification, distribution, and use in Hararghe Zones and clarifying roles and responsibilities of actors and stakeholders involved in seed value chain.

BENEFIT-ISSD Ethiopia provided training on seed quality control techniques and principles

BENEFIT-ISSD Ethiopia project organized a training program for experts of four public seed enterprises on Seed quality control techniques and principles, from June 15-16, 2017 at Bin International Hotel, Bishoftu, Ethiopia. The objectives of the training are to equip public seed enterprise experts with the basic seed quality control techniques and principles; to minimize the incident of supplying sub-standard seeds for the smallholder farmers and to create experience sharing forum for the seed quality control experts of the public seed enterprises.

ISSD Amhara provided ToT on seed deployment and adaptation

BENEFIT ISSD Amhara has organized training of trainers on seed deployment and adaptation for 36 Woreda and kebele experts from the six informal seed system piloting Woredas of Amhara region on 18-20 May 2017 at Debre Tabor. The objective of the training is to train experts on ways to increase the seed choice options of farmers particularly through crowdsourcing and Participatory Variety Selection (PVS) and increase seed deployment and adaptation of available varieties.

BENEFIT-ISSD Oromia East facilitated regional seed core group meeting

BENEFIT ISSD Oromia East Project unit organized one-day Regional Core Group meeting at Haramaya University on May 8, 2017. A total of 10 representatives from zone department of Agricultrure (DoA), Zone Cooperatives Depatment, Universities, research Centers, NGOs, and unions have participated.

Woreda wheat value chain platform established

ISSD Amhara in partnership with CASCAPE Amhara region has facilitated the establishment of bread wheat value chain platform at Bure Woreda, one of the highest wheat producer Woredas of Amhara region, on 11 May 2017 at Bure town. The role of the Platform is to oversee and coordinate the development of bread wheat production in the Woreda and support the actors through strengthening the wheat value chain.

Training Experts to improving Wheat seed productivity

(Bahir Dar_04 April 2017)_ ISSD Amhara and CASCAPE projects provided training on bread wheat seed production, pest management and post-harvest handling to 20 Bure Woreda and Kebele experts on 28 April 2017. The training is part of the collaboration of BENEFIT ISSD Ethiopia and BENEFIT CASCAPE projects at Bahir Dar University to strengthening the bread wheat value chain in Amhara region.  The collaboration aims to improve productivity by 25% and income by 10% from bread wheat through the introduction of newly released varieties, capacity building of Development Agents (DAs), Subject Mater Specialists (SMS) and farmers, improving seed access, linking the product with a market and establishing bread wheat platform.

ISSD SNNPR Hold consultative meeting on direct seed marketing implementation & effective seed demand assessement

ISSD SNNPR program unit, on February 14, 2017, organized a consultative meeting for the regional core group members on the findings of the assessments conducted in the implementation of direct seed marketing and effective seed demand. The prime objective of the consultative meeting was to show the status, identify challenges and develop recommendations and then propose better strategy for implementation of direct seed marketing and effective seed demand assessment.

Developing participatory action agenda to strengthen seed sector development

BENEFIT ISSD Ethiopia and major national and regional seed sector development partners in Ethiopia collaboratively strategized seed sector development interventions to tackle key bottlenecks affecting the seed sector of Ethiopia.

Seed marketing strategy; key to public seed enterprises?

BENEFIT-ISSD Ethiopia Project facilitated seed marketing strategy development training for Ethiopian public seed enterprises to increase their effectiveness both in giving services and make reasonable profit margin by employing market strategies in their seed businesses.
In collaboration with Wageningen UR Centre for Development Innovation (CDI), ISSD facilitated the training workshop for four public seed enterprises from 21-23 December 2016 at Saro Mara Hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

ISSD Amhara provided capacity development training workshop for seed producer farmers

ISSD Amhara has provided seed production and cooperative organization capacity strengthening training workshop for seed producer farmers from five directly supported SPCs and supporting Woreda experts on selected crops for three days.The training aimed at equipping farmers well with the technical skills needed in seed production and marketing of potato, tef, wheat and sesame. Besides, to strengthen their organizational and management capacities of their cooperatives, cooperative management and entrepreneurship topics have been also given by experts.
